ABOUT US

HOW WE BEGAN

The late Karen Dunigan formed the first 100+ giving group (which was for women only) in Jackson, Michigan in 2006.  Four times a year, members meet for just one hour to hear from or discuss three local area charities from those nominated by the members.  Afterward, the members vote. The charity winning the majority of votes receives a $100.00 donation from each member.  Thus a group of one hundred members would generate a donation of $10,000.00!

The idea is so simple and so rewarding that other groups and other locales soon joined in.  Today, hundreds of these groups exist across the nation and even across our borders with Canada and Mexico.  Here in Dayton, a group of women followed Karen's lead, and in 2007, formed the first of the 100+ giving groups outside of Michigan.  In 2008, Bob Hewitt formed the 100+ Men Who Care of Dayton, the first such group for men.

Beginning in 2012, Bob began handing off the administrative responsibilities, first to John Spoelker, then within a year, to Joe Lehman, the current volunteer group administrator.

HOW WE OPERATE

The concept behind 100+ giving groups is elegant in its simplicity.  The Dayton men meet for one hour each quarter, on the third Tuesday in February, May, August, and November. Attendance is encouraged, but not required, as each meeting is recorded and the video later posted on-line.

Each member agrees to donate $100.00 each quarter ($400 per year).   All member donations to go The Dayton Foundation and all grants to selected charities are issued through the Foundation.  Their services are provided at no cost.

Each member also has the privilege of nominating one local area charity. Before each meeting, three charities are selected randomly from those nominated by the members.  At each meeting, members listen to a 10 minute presentation from each charity or view the video later.  Votes are cast later on-line.  The charity with the majority vote receives a grant equal to $100.00 times the number of members.

Men 18 years of age and older are welcome to join.  To join, you need only to attend a meeting and/or contact Joe Lehman.

100% of all donations go to local Dayton-area charities (except for a nominal 3% fee charged by credit companies when our members elect to charge their donation). Other than this occasional small fee (which some members cover by "plussing up" their donation by $3.00), we have no operating or administrative expenses.
